Pilates for Strength
Pilates enhances strength through controlled, resistance-based movements, which focus on deep core muscles, spinal mobility, and overall functional strength.
Strength exercise improves bone strength and density, lowering the risk of osteoporosis, builds up muscle control and strengthens muscles and joints improving balance.
Pilates practice is all about concentrating on building the strength and control of different movements.
Planks and press ups use the body to create resistance and build up strength, or you can use different pieces of equipment to add resistance too.
The Resistance Band is an highly versatile and portable piece of small equipment. It comes in different tensions so you can start light and build up muscle and increase strength. But at the same time the resistance band is low impact so does not load the spine or joints like an heavy weight might. This is why it has many benefits in Pilates.
Weighted Balls are soft and can be easier to grip than dumbbells.
The Toe Tap with a Chest Fly pictured shows the Toe Tap to build core strength and the weighted balls being used in a Chest Fly to increase resistance, strengthening the chest and shoulders.
Resistance Bands are generally available but I would recommend getting a physio grade one, such as the Sissel Fitband Essential and Weighted Balls are available from the same supplier, select Sissel Pilates Toning Balls.
